SHANGHAI, Aug 30 (SMM) - Slovenian aluminium smelter Talum said this week that it had cut its output by 80% due to high electricity costs. A spokesman for Talum said the plant would stop most of the aluminium production.
Talum has a capacity of around 84,000 mt. But according to market sources, it was only running at 50% of the capacity previously. And now that production has been reduced by 80%, only 20% of capacity is still running, or around 17,000 mt/year.
It is understood that the strike at Hydro's Sunndal plant has been lifted and there has been no reduction in production for the time being. To date, the cumulative reduction in production capacity of aluminium in Europe and North America is approximately 1.45 million mt.
